Weekends don’t tend to mean anything for the five months of the year or so that it takes me to write my books. Even when I was a teacher I worked at a boarding school and taught on Saturdays, so I’m used to weekends disappearing before my eyes. I’m just about to start the writing phase of a new novel and once I get into the swing of it I’ll work to a target of 1,000 words a day, reaching about 100,000 in total. It takes a lot of discipline. I tend to eat at my desk and Debbie brings me coffee so I can keep going, but there’s a sticker on my computer that echoes exactly how I feel about the process. It says: “Being a good writer is 3 per cent talent, and 97 per cent not being distracted by the internet.”
