Unit content, astonish, entertain, direct, particular, badly off, pick out, cut off 1. content adj. 满足的;满意的 n. 内容;目录;容量;满足 vt. 使满足 be content to do sth 乐于做某事 be content with 对…满足 / 满意 do sth to one’s heart’s content 心满意足地、尽情地做某事 content oneself with 满足于;使(某人)自己对…感到满足 eg: That rich man is tired of city life, so he is content to live in the country. He got a new job in a hotel and he is content with it. As he had to drive home after the party, he contented himself with two glasses of beer. We can swim in the river to our hearts’ content. 注:content作形容词,通常作表语、后置定语或状语,作前置定语时要用contented,如a contented expression满足的表情;在充当表语表示“非常满意”时,用be well content而不能用be very content。 2. astonish vt. 使惊诧 astonish sb with / by sth 用某事使某人惊讶 be astonished at / by sth 对某事感到惊讶 be astonished to do sth 惊讶地做某事 astonished adj. 感到吃惊的 astonishment n. 惊讶 astonishing adj. 令人吃惊的 at one’s astonishment 使某人惊讶的是 in astonishment 吃惊的 eg: That he passed the English test astonished everyone. They were all astonished to hear To our astonishment, he actually arrived punctually. = What astonished us was that he actually arrived punctually. 3. entertain entertain sb (to sth) 宴客;招待;款待(尤指在自己家中) entertain sb (with sth) (用…)使某人快乐 entertain sb as… 把某人当…招待 entertaining adj. 愉快的;有趣的 entertainment n. 招待;款待;娱乐片;演出 eg: I entertained my friends to dinner yesterday evening. He entertained us for hours with his stories and jokes. The man entertained the children with all kinds of tricks. It’s not a very serious film, but a good entertainment. 4. direct adj. 径直的;直接的;直率的 adv. 直接地 direct sb to do sth 指示(令)某人做某事 direct + that从句 (谓语动词用虚拟语气) direct sb to a place 告诉某人去某地 in the direction of… 朝…方向 under the direction of… 在…指导下 in all directions (= in every direction) 朝四面八方 directly adv. “直接地”,也可作连词,引导时间状语从句,意为“一…就…” 辨析direct / directly: 1 direct指行进中不停步,不绕道,直奔目的地。 2 directly指以一种直接的方式。表时间时,指“立刻,不拖延”之意。 eg: The police officers had been directed to search the building. Can you direct me to the post office? At the sound of the gun, the birds flew in all directions. Directly the teacher came in, everyone was quiet. The next flight doesn’t go direct to 5. particular adj. 特殊的,特别的;挑剔的 n. 细节,细目 be particular about / over sth 对…讲究,挑剔 in particular 尤其,特别;格外 辨析especially / specially / particularly: 1 especially指某事超乎一般的重要,强调“超过其他”;常用于一些强调需要得到特别注意或特别待遇的场合,含有对比的意味。 2 specially多指为了某一特定目的而专门做某事。 3 particularly表示“特别地,尤其地”,可以与especially互换,但particularly还可作“详细地,细致地”讲,侧重指从同类中把特例选出,强调在某一方面表现尤为突出。 eg: The girl is very particular about her food. She loves the song in particular / particularly, because her mother used to sing it. I have nothing particular to do today. This kind of bike is specially designed for children. 6. badly off 穷的;缺乏的 be well off 境况很好;富裕 be better off 境况较好 be worse off 更穷的 越来越坏;每况愈下 go from bad to worse to make matters worse = (and) what is worse而更糟糕的是 eg: I’ve got quite a big room so I’m not too badly off. The school is rather badly off for books and equipment. We shouldn’t complain about being poor because many families are much worse off. 7. pick out 挑出;辨别出 pick up 拾起,捡起;收拾,整理;(偶然)学会;用车接某人;收听到;身体好转 pick oneself up 跌倒后站起来 pick up with sb 结识某人 pick and choose 挑三拣四 eg: Read the play again and pick out the major theme. See if you can pick me out in this photo. The bus picks up passengers outside the airport. 8. cut off 切掉,割掉;分离,隔离(常跟from);中断 cut across 抄近路穿过;径直穿过 cut away 切掉;剪掉 cut down 砍倒;杀死;削减;缩短 cut in 插嘴;突然插入 cut into halves / pieces 切成两半 / 碎块 cut out 切掉;删掉 cut up 切碎;使丧气;使痛心 eg: The country’s economy would collapse if oil supplies were cut off. She kept cutting in on our conversation. Let’s cut out the unimportant details. The doctor told him to cut down on his drinking. 9. Charlie first picks out the laces and eats them as if they were spaghetti. 本句as if引导方式状语从句,表示与当时状况不相符的状况,故用虚拟语气。 1 as if引导从句用陈述语气的情况: 当说话者认为句子所陈述的是真实的或极有可能发生或存在的事实时,从句用陈述语气。 2 as if引导从句用虚拟语气的情况: a. 从句动词表示的动作在时间上与主句动词表示的动作同时发生,从句动词用过去式。 b. 从句动词表示的动作在时间上比主句动词表示的动作早发生,从句动词用had done。 c. 从句动词表示的动作在时间上比主句动词表示的动作晚发生,从句动词用would / could / might + do。 eg: It looks as if it is going to rain.
