1. roll  
  (1) n. 摇晃,名单   eg: The teacher was calling the roll. 
  (2) vt. 滚动;卷;摇晃    eg: She rolled the string into a ball. 
  (3) vi. 滚动向前;行驶;流浪    eg: The drunken man rolled to me. 
  be rolling in 在……中打滚;沉溺于  big roll [美]大叠的钞票   
  roll around (时间)流逝   roll in 滚滚而来;在……中翻滚
2. folk  
  (1) adj. 民间的    eg: folk music 民间音乐      a folk remedy 民间验方
  (2) n.[常用复数]人们;[古]民族    eg: Folks will believe anything they are told.

3. predict  vt. (常与that连用)预言,预示    eg: She predicted that he would marry a doctor.

  perform (1) vt. 履行,表演    eg: You should always perform what you promise.

   be familiar with 熟悉,通晓    eg: Are you familiar with this type of car? 
16. dream of 梦见,渴望,想到   eg: I dream of being the best footballer in the town. 
   dream of中的dream还可以用作名词,这时dream of的意思是“……的梦想”
   eg: His dream of being a doctor has come true. 
   dream up 设计;策划     eg: They dreamed up a plan to corner the market. 
17. to be honest 说实话,老实说    eg: To be honest, I don’t like his story. 
   to be frank 坦率地说      to be sure 自然,固然
18. play joke on  开某人玩笑,戏弄某人    eg: It’s not polite to play a joke on a disabled person. 
19. rely on 依赖,信赖    eg: You should rely on your own efforts. 
【辨析】rely与depend的区别:
rely指“在过去经验的基础上,依赖某人或某事物,希望从中得到支持或帮助”   
eg: He can be relied on to keep the secret. 
depend指“出于信赖而依靠他人或他物,以取得其支持或帮助,这种信赖可能有过去的经验为根据,也可能没有”   
eg: He can depend on his wife for sympathy.

ever  
(1) 曾经    eg: It is one of the ugliest faces I have ever seen. 
(2) (加强语气)究竟     eg: How ever do you find the time to learn cooking? 
(3) (与so, such连用)十分,非常     eg: He is ever so diligent. 
(4) 总是;始终     eg: I have lived here ever since I was a child. 
23. However, there was one band that started in a different way.
however  
(1) conj. 然而,可是     eg: Certainly he apologized. However, I won’t forgive him. 
【辨析】however与but的区别:二者意义相同;但however是较正式的说法。but置于句首,而however可置于句首、句中、句末,且以置于句中,前后用逗号隔开之情形较多。  
(2) adv. (引导让步状语从句) 无论如何……也    eg: However hot it is, he will not take off his coat. 
(3) 无论用任何方法    eg: However you use it, it won’t break. 
(4) (口语)到底如何(是how的强调形式,一般认为要分成how ever两个词才正确)
eg: How ever did you raise this much money? 
24. However, after a year or so in which they became more serious about their work, the Monkees started to play and sing their own songs like a real band.
in which在这里修饰a year or so,相当于when。  
eg: I still remember the day on which (when) I first came here.

(1) (常与to,with连用) 连接,联结  eg: Will you connect this wire to the television?
(2) (与with连用) 接驳(火车、飞机等联运),衔接;接通电话;有联系

2. contain  vt. 包含,容纳,抑制    eg: Science sought an effective method of containing the disease.
【辨析】contain与include的区别:
contain强调所包含的内容、成分、量。    eg: The album contains many memorable songs.
   include指整体包含若干部分。    eg: My payment will include an amount for postage.
3. continue  
(1) vi.&vt. 继续,后面既可接不定式,也可接动名词。  
eg: Will you continue gardening after dinner?
(2) 系动词,意为“继续处于某种状态”    eg: On his way home, he continued angry with me.
continual  adj.  连续的,持续不断的(可能有中断的)  continuous  adj. 持续的,连续不断的
4. in addition 另外,加上,又   eg: There was an earthquake and, in addition, there were tidal waves.
in addition to 加上……之上   eg: In addition to that, they raised chickens, ducks, hogs, sheep and fish.
5. sort out 挑选出,拣选    eg: Sort out these papers and fasten them together with a clip, please.
sort out from 把……从……挑出来        eg: He sorted out the wheat from the chaff.
6. mix up 混淆,混合    eg: If you mix up those data we shan’t find the one we need quickly.

  come about 发生   come across 偶遇;碰到  come on 出现,出场  come out (花)开;出版;暴露 
come to 达到,总计为;结果是;苏醒    come up 走近;(从土中)长出,发芽;被提出
10. above all  最重要,首先    eg: Above all, just have fun!
11. stick to  坚守;遵循;忠于(某人)   eg: She always sticks to her word.
   stick to a post 坚守岗位        stick to one’s word 遵守诺言
12. stay with 把……坚持或继续下去    eg: They decided to stay with him.
13. As you know, our band was formed in a very unusual way.
as引导的非限制性定语从句多置于句首,译为“正如……”
eg: As is known to us all, he is an honest man.
