3. preserve vt. 保护；维护；保存(使免受破坏)；保留

preservation n. 维护；保护；保持；保养
eg: I think there traditional customs should be preserved.
They were determined to preserve their leader from humiliation. (侮辱)
You can preserve meat or fish in salt.

4. advance
in advance 预先；提前（指事先）
in advance of 在…前面；超过
advance on / upon / towards 朝…前进
advanced adj. 高级的；先进的
辨析advance / progress; in advance / ahead of：
1 advance指具体的人或物，也指科学、事业等前进、进步，指有意识地坚决促进好事，也可指助长不好的事。in advance“提前；事先”。
2 progress指经常地、持续地或稳定地前进、进步。作名词用时，progress是不可数名词，advance是可数名词。in progress“在进展中”。
1 in advance“在前面；预先；事先”。
2 ahead of“比…提前；比…更早”（指比原计划的时间提前完成）。
eg: Chemical fertilizers advance the growth of crops.
He worked so well that he was soon advanced to the position of secretary.
Remarkable advances have been made in space science.
His ideas were in advance of his time.
5. admission n. 允许进入；入场费；承认
make an admission of sth = admit sth 承认某事
obtain / gain admission to / into 获准进入

eg: He has the qualifications for admission to the college.

6. no wonder 难怪；不足为奇
wonder n. [U]惊奇；惊叹 [C]奇迹；奇事
wonderful adj. 极好的；精彩的
wonder vt. 想知道；觉得好奇，后面常接when, where, why, how, if, whether等引导的宾语从句。
vi. 对…感到奇怪 / 惊异，后面常跟介词at。
eg: It’s no wonder that you can’t sleep when you eat so much.
What are the seven wonders of the world?
I wonder how you came to miss your way.
We wondered at the speed at which it arrived.
7. come to life 活跃起来；苏醒过来(life不用复数形式)
bring…to life 使…恢复生机
come back to life 苏醒过来
when it comes to 当谈到；说到
come about 发生；产生
come across 偶遇；偶然发现
come out 泄露；出版
come to an end 结束
come to 共计；达到；苏醒；（突然）想到；意识到

eg: Only with his friends can he come to life.

whenever = no matter when 引导让步状语从句
however = no matter how
whatever, whichever, who(m)ever既可引导让步状语从句，又可引导名词性从句。
no matter what, no matter which, no matter who(m)只引导让步状语从句。
eg: However tough the problem may be, I’ll work it out by myself. (= No matter how)
I’ll be your true friend, whatever happens. (= no matter what)
Whoever leaves the room last should remember to turn off the light. (≠ No matter who)

not only…but also…“不但…，而且…”
1 相似的表达：not just…bust also
not merely…but also
not simply…but also
not only…but…as well
2 not only / just与but also后面所连接的词的词性必须对等。
3 连接两个主语时，谓语动词的数要根据就近原则来确定。
4 not only等形式只能连用，而but also既可连用，也可分开用，also也可省略。
5 not only放在句首，后接句子要用倒装结构。
eg: He not only read the book, but also remembered what he had read.
Not only the teacher but also his students are invited to the party.
注：not…but…的意思与以上的短语不同，其含义是“不是…而是…”；can not but“不得不；不能不”。
