Unit 1 A land of diversity

means, majority, percentage, occur, make a life, keep up, take in, a great / good many

1. means  n.  手段;方法

by this means  用这种方法

by means of   通过;用;借助于

by no means  决不;一点也不(放在句首时,句子用部分倒装语序)

by all means   务必、不惜一切地;(用于交际英语表示同意)当然可以,没问题

eg: Today an airship is used as means of advertising.

The burglars entered the house by means of a ladder.

By no means is this the first time you have been late.

注:1 means作为一个单复数同形的名词,常与主谓一致结合起来进行考查;要注意,means作主语时,前有 several, some, many, few, all等修饰语时,谓语用复数。

    2 way多与in连用,构成in…way

       method多与with连用,构成with…method

       means多与by连用,构成by…means

       approach多与to连用,构成approach to…

2. majority  n.  大多数;大半

in a / the majority      占大多数

get a majority         获得多数票

have a majority over sb 获得多于某人的票数;战胜某人

by / with a majority of  以大多数…赢得…

minority  n.   少数

in the minority  占少数

eg: He won the seat with a majority of 71 votes.

A majority of people believe smoking is harmful to health.

The majority of lone parents are divorced or separated women.

注:1 单独用作主语,谓语动词用单数、复数均可。The majority were / was against the plan.

2 单独用作主语,如果后面的表语是复数,那么谓语动词也用复数。The majority who attended the meeting yesterday are students.

                      复数名词 + 复数谓语动词

3 The majority of

                      不可数名词 +单数谓语动词

The majority of the damage is easy to repair.

3. percentage  n.  百分比;百分率

1 percentage“百分比,百分率”,其前不用具体的数字修饰,可以被highlow等形容词修饰。

2 percent“百分之…”,相当于“%”,其前面往往用具体数字修饰。

3 “a percentage of + n.”在句中作主语时,谓语动词的单复数视名词的单复数而定。

eg: The unemployment percentage keeps rising in the recent financial crisis.

California is a state with a high percentage of immigrants.

Over ninety percent of my classmates have an English dictionary.

4. occur  vi.  发生;出现

occur to sb    发生在某人身上

it occurs to sb to do sth  某人想起做某事

sth occurs to sb

sth strikes sb

sth comes to sb            某人突然想起…

It occurs to sb that-clause

It strikes sb that-clause

eg: It occurred to me to visit my parents.

It occurred to her that she might adopt a homeless child.

I was going along the street looking for a place to park when the accident occurred.

5. make a life  习惯于新的生活方式、工作等

come to life  突然苏醒;突然开始工作;突然变得活跃

live / lead a…life  过着…生活

come back to life  苏醒过来;恢复生气

bring…back to life  使…苏醒过来

full of life    充满生气

for life   终生;一生;终身

start a new life  开始新生活

to the life  栩栩如生;逼真

make / earn a / one’s living   谋生

eg: They went to the West and decided to make a life there.

To our surprise, he came to life soon.

The rescue team brought the baby back to life.

6. keep up  坚持;维持;沿袭(风俗、传统等)

keep (on) doing sth  继续、重复做某事

keep sth up  使某物保持在高水平

keep sb from doing sth  阻止某人做某事

keep on   继续

keep out of…  不进入(某处),留在外边

keep to sth  遵守;信守

keep up with…  跟上…;与…同步前进

eg: I hope the fine weather will keep up.

Police warned bystanders to keep away from the blazing building.

She kept on working although she was tired.

Things will only work out if we all keep to the plan.

7. take in  包括;吸收;理解;欺骗

take away    拿走;使离开;消除(病痛等)

take down   记下来;拆掉

take for     (错)当做;(误)以为

take off     起飞;匆匆离去;脱下;大获成功

take on     呈现;雇用

take over    接收;接管;取代

take up     占去,占据;开始;从事

eg: He certainly took us in with his stories about his experiences in Mexico.

This kind of cloth takes in water easily.

Learning English takes up a lot of my time.

8. a great / good many  许多;很多

many

a great many             + 可数名词的复数

a good many             + 复数谓语

a good / large number of

much

a good / great deal of   + 不可数名词 + 单数谓语

a large amount of

a lot of           可数名词的复数 + 复数谓语

lots of      +

plenty of         不可数名词 + 单数谓语

large amounts of + 不可数名词 + 复数谓语

quantities of + 可数名词的复数/不可数名词+复数谓语

a mass of + 可数名词的复数/不可数名词 + 单数谓语

masses of + 可数名词的复数/不可数名词 + 复数谓语

eg: Tom found that there were a great / good many people already there.

It seems that a great / good many of them are out of work now.

A great many of the flowers were white.

注:a good / great many后接复数名词,但 a good / great many后接of时,必须加限定词,如these / those / the / one’s等,然后再加名词复数。

9. That is why today over 40% of Californians speak Spanish as a first or second language.

句中的why引导的为表语从句,注意以下句式区别。

1 That’s why… 这就是为什么… (why从句表示结果)

2 That’s because… 这是因为… (because从句表示原因)

3The reason why…is / was that… …的原因是… (表语从句常用that引导,而不用because)

eg: Tom came late for the meeting. That was because he was ill.

Tom was ill. That was why he came late for the meeting.

The reason why Tom came late for the meeting was that he was ill.
